The Pathway

Premises

Home, rented rooms or online. The real trade-offs of each way of seeing clients, and how to choose for your practice.

Where you see clients shapes more than you’d think: your costs, your boundaries, how far people will travel, and how the work feels day to day. There’s no single right answer, only trade-offs, and this stage lays them out so you can pick the one that fits your practice and your life.

Most counsellors end up with a mix, or move between options as the practice grows. The point is to choose deliberately rather than default into whatever’s nearest.

In this stage

Working from home The cheapest option and the one with the most to think through: boundaries, privacy, safeguarding and keeping your address off the internet.

Renting therapy rooms The real economics of hourly versus regular hire, and how to work out what you can afford.

Therapy room hire costs across the UK Real hourly rates city by city, and the break-even maths for whether a room earns its keep.

Online practice Setting up to see clients online properly, from the platform to the room you appear from.

Where to start

If money is tight and you have a suitable, private space at home, start there and read the working-from-home guidance carefully, because the boundaries matter. If home isn’t an option or doesn’t suit the work, look at room hire and run the numbers before committing to anything regular.
