Google Business Profile for counsellors: the free listing that puts you on the map

How to set up a Google Business Profile as a UK counsellor so you show up in local searches and maps, with a note on privacy if you work from home.

Last updated: July 2026

When someone searches “counsellor near me”, the results that sit at the top, on the little map with the pins, aren’t ordinary websites. They’re Google Business Profiles. It’s a free listing, it’s one of the strongest local-visibility tools you have, and a surprising number of counsellors never set one up.

Here’s how it works and how to do it properly.

What it is and why it matters

A Google Business Profile is the panel that appears when someone searches for your practice or for a service like yours nearby. It shows your name, area, hours, contact details, reviews and photos, and it feeds the local map results.

For a counsellor, that’s valuable because so much of your potential work is local and intent-driven. People search for help near them and often choose from those first few map results without scrolling much further. A complete, accurate profile gives you a shot at being one of them. No profile, and you’re simply not in that part of the results at all.

Setting it up

Go to Google Business Profile and create a listing in your practice’s name. A few things are worth doing carefully rather than quickly.

Choose your category thoughtfully. Google asks what your business is, and the category you pick, whether that is a counselling or a mental-health-service option, shapes which searches you appear for. Pick the one that fits your main work, and add relevant secondary categories.

Fill in everything. Hours, a clear description of what you do and who you help, a link to your website, and a contact method. A half-finished profile looks less trustworthy and ranks less well than a complete one.

Add real photos. A picture of you and, if appropriate, your consulting space does more for a nervous enquirer than a logo. It makes the listing feel like a real person and place.

Then verify it. Google confirms you’re genuinely the business, usually by post, phone or another method, and your profile won’t show its full benefit until you do. It’s a small step people often leave half-done.

If you work from home, protect your address

This one matters. By default a profile can display your full address, which you almost certainly don’t want if you practise from home. Google lets you set up as a service-area business instead, showing the town or region you cover without publishing your street address. Use that option if home is your base. It keeps you visible locally without putting your front door on the map.

Reviews, handled carefully

Reviews influence both how you rank and whether someone picks you, so they’re worth having. But counselling isn’t like most businesses here. Asking clients for public reviews sits awkwardly against the confidentiality and boundaries of the work, and your professional body may well have a view on soliciting client testimonials. So tread thoughtfully: be aware of your own body’s guidance before you ask anyone for a review, and never do anything that could identify a client or pressure them. Genuine, freely given feedback is fine; chasing it is where it gets delicate.

Keep it consistent

One last thing that quietly helps. Your name, area and contact details should match across your website, your directory listings and your Google profile. When those all say the same thing, Google is more confident it’s dealing with one real, settled business, and that consistency supports your local visibility. Mismatches, old addresses and half-updated details work against you.

The quick version

Create the profile, choose the right category, fill it in fully, add real photos, and verify it. Set yourself up as a service-area business if you work from home. Be careful and body-aware about reviews. Keep your details identical everywhere. It’s free, it takes an afternoon, and it puts you exactly where local searchers are looking.

Rather have this done for you? Setting up a Google Business Profile is entirely doable yourself, and the steps above are the whole brief. If you’d sooner hand it over, our Google Business Profile setup does it for £150, or the Get Found package covers Google, directories and every listing together for £250.
